February 01-04

This week we will begin our Government Unit.

Tuesday, Feb.01:

1)Brainstorming activity.  We will define bias and its relation to media.
2)We will explore different forms of media and how Bias’s may influence the subject being covered.  Students will review the link: http://www.mediaawareness.ca/english/resources/educational/lessons/secondary/broadcast_news/bias_news_lesson.cfm  **(try searching the link in Google if it does not open on your computer)
3)Students will look at the following links and assess the various forms of bias in media.
Wednesday, Feb.02: 
1)We will define government and understand which characteristics are necessary to establish an effective government.  Students will copy definitions into their notebooks.
2)Students will look at the concept of democracy and understand how it relates to government.

Thursday, Feb.03
1) Understand the main characteristics and the history of various forms of political ideologies.
2) Compare and contrast the advantages and disadvantages between various political ideologies to Canada current government system.
4)Students will use a Chart to compare and contrast the advantages and disadvantages of each political ideology. Students will compare and contrast the similarities of differences between democracy and the political ideologies using the T-Chart.  Charts should look like this:http://www.sabresocials.com/Danny/Socials%2011/Lesson3%20Chart.pdf
5)Read pages 11-15 in Canada in a Changing World: Government.
Fill in the Political Ideologies Chart.  The first part must be fully completed.
Friday, Feb.04
1)Political Ideologies continued...
2)Understanding the Political Spectrum.
4)Fill in the second part of the Political Ideologies Chart from last class.
5)Homework:
-Students must bring in newspaper articles or online newspaper articles about each political party (2 articles for each political party Conservative, Green Party, Liberal Party and NDP)   Your homework assignment is to recognize the political ideologies of the political parties  in your newspaper/online clippings.  Write down 3-5 characteristics of each political party and list hich political ideologies they represent.
