4) Using Textbook Pgs. 25-28, the VIDEO CLIP and the provided Handout “The Gupta Empire”, students write a “letter” from the point of view of a foreigner visiting Ancient India During the Gupta Empire written to their family back home. They must describe the Lifestyle (4 characteristics), Science (2), Art (2), Technology (1) and Social Life (2) of people living under the Gupta Empire. Students must include a minimum number of descriptors for each category as designated in the brackets (). The letter should be at least a paragraph long.  TOTAL MARKS     /10 Due at the end of class.
5) Homework: Read pg.25-26, answer Section Review Questions 4-7 on page 26 in Patterns of Civilization.

1) We begin the Unit on Ancient China today.
2) Understand the role of Confucius and Lao Tse in Confucianism and Taoism.
3) Outline the main teachings of Confucianism and Taoism.
5) In Class Assignment: 

-Draw 3 Columns.
Column 1: Philosophies
Column 2: Similarities
Column 3: Differences
-Using the PowerPoint and Pages 28-30 in your “Patterns of Civilization” Textbook outline the similarities and differences between the 3 Chinese Philosophies.
-Once completed, answer this question individually. 
“Which Chinese Philosophy would be the most effective in Today’s world”?
 Explain your reason and provide examples of how your Philosophy of choice would work in our school. 
Friday, April 15
1) Song Dynasty: Arts and Culture
2) The importance of the Song Dynasty and its influence on Arts and Culture in China.
3) The different techniques used by the Song Dynasty in Art.
4) Read pages 117-119 in Patterns of Civilization.

6) Review Assignment: 
Make sure students understand that they are to choose 3 techniques on Slide 9.
They are going to create their own “Painting” using 3 of the techniques.
On the back of their drawing/painting they must include which technique they chose and explain how it is used in the drawing.
They do not have to PAINT but if they want to they can. They can use markers, pencil crayons, pastels. Whatever art material they have access to.
 Create a Replica drawing of the Song Dynasty and the prominent Arts and Culture during the dynasty. (TOTAL 10 MARKS)
 You are to use 3 techniques from Chinese Paintings using the PowerPoint as a reference. (Slide 8 & 9) (5 MARKS)
 Indicate on the back of your drawing what 3 techniques you included and what your image illustrates. (5 MARKS)
 Your image must illustrate a characteristic of the Arts and Culture of the Song Dynasty. Use your textbook as a reference. (Pg 119)
